Grupo das Candeias

Grupo das Candeias

The Hudson Portuguese Club is very proud to be the home of the musical group Grupo das Candeias.  Originally forming under the name Tuna das Candeias in 2002, the group changed their name to honor Nossa Senhora das Candeias, a name of the church in town of Santo Espírito on the island of Santa Maria in the Azores where some of the musicians are from – others have roots in São Miguel and mainland Portugal.

The groups consists of many musicians playing various stringed instruments, accordions and percussion instruments.  Accompanying the music are the talents of several gifted vocalists.  The ages of the musicians range from high school to retirement – the older members mentoring the younger.

Grupo das Candeias performs frequently in Hudson at parades and different social and cultural events.  They have traveled to perform all over New England, Florida and internationally in Montreal and Cambridge Canada.  Their music is primarily from the Azorean Islands with a select set from mainland Portugal.

The group is coordinated by Juvenália Chaves and Laura Monteiro.

Rehearsals every Tuesday evening at the Hudson Portuguese Club.

The group can be contacted via email: grupodascandeias@hudsonportugueseclub.org or call Juvenália Chaves at 978-875-0352.
